Congress OKs new StL archives facility

From The ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, January 24,2008

ST. LOUIS -- Congress has given final approval for a planned 525,000-square-foot facility for Spanish Lake to house the National Archives and Records Administration.

"Support from the St. Louis area Congressional Delegation, St. Louis County and the St. Louis County Economic Council has been a vital part of this project," Brad Scott, U.S. General Service's Administration's regional administrator said in a press release. "We've had active and engaged representatives fighting to keep these jobs in St. Louis."

The new site for the records center to be built at 1929 Dunn Road will mean that 500 federal jobs that could have been cut will remain in St. Louis. The center, which is currently housed at 9700 Page Avenue, will relocate to the center. The agency's downtown facility on Winnebago Street, along with its Dielman Avenue annex, will also be housed at the new center.

The government has already signed a purchase option for the land -- 23.5 acres -- where the facility will be built. The agency has yet to pick a developer.
