ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - Plans are in place to transform a local historic site in south St. Louis County. Officials want to turn the Jefferson Barracks complex into a national tourist destination. Jefferson Barracks has played a significant role in U.S. history for the past 120 years and now county officials are looking at the role it will play for future generations.

Monday, the St. Louis County Economic Council is holding an open house to unveil a $65 million master plan for the complex. The economic council has been in the planning process for the past year. The goal is to make Jefferson Barracks a "national military history" destination by building museums, historic trails and offering re-enactments.

Other possible enhancements include building an interpretive center and presidential museum and library. Plus, a trolley to transport visitors from downtown to south St. Louis County.

The master plan also calls for a Lemay Aquatic and Community Center to be built at the park.

Planners say funding will come from both private and public sources.

The master plan also calls for the VA medical center to transfer over 30 acres to the national cemetery to deal with a shortage of burial plots.

Public viewing of Jefferson Barracks master plan will be open until 7:00pm Monday.
