Two Missouri state leaders have submitted two pieces of legislation that could hopefully bring thousands of jobs back to the former site of the Chrysler plant in Fenton.
State Senator Eric Schmitt (R-District 15) and State Representative Mike Leara (R-District 95) filed separate bills in their respective legislative bodies with the purpose of enhancing existing programs, making expansion and job creation more attractive in the Fenton area. Assignment to a committee and hearings on both bills are expected to occur in the next several weeks.
The proposed legislation expires October 31, 2014.
It amends two currently existing programs for in-state tax credits and slightly relaxes existing quality jobs criteria for business expansion projects at the site and properties within a one mile radius.
According to St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley, the closing of the Chrysler facility affected approximately 32,000 jobs in the greater St. Louis area.
