ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOX) -- With the ability to bottle and ship 500,000 pills each hour, the new Express Scripts facility at Hanley and I-70 in north St. Louis County officially opened Thursday.
"We didn't call it a 'pharmacy' when we introduced it," Express Scripts Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer George Paz said during a ceremony at the 224,000-square-foot facility near Lambert Airport.
"If you look at the name on the front of the door it's not called a 'pharmacy', it's called a 'Technology and Innovation Center'. And the reason it has that name is it's more than a pharmacy."
U.S. Senator Kit Bond called the center and it's 300 jobs a shot in the arm for an economy still trying to claw its way out of a recession.
"This is the best news we can have in the tough economic times that we face," Bond said. "St. Louis has lost a number of corporate headquarters and very often we think 'Man, who's left?'. Well I'll tell you who's left...a company that's growing and blowing and going, and that is Express Scripts."
Express Scripts claims the new Home Delivery pharmacy at the Innovation Center is the most advanced one they operate, with an accuracy rate greater than 99.99%, compared to 98.3% at other retail pharmacies.
"The difference may seem small," Paz said, "but it means that our three Home Delivery pharmacies nationwide eliminate 2 million drug errors each year."
