It's been a rough several years for this patch of south St. Louis County, but now the Main Street-like area is betting on brighter days ahead, thanks to River City Casino.

"You have access to the river. You have, literally, gentle rolling hills. You have architecture which is unique, but for several years, the area has suffered economically," County Councilman Steve Stenger says of Lemay.

But now, there's a marketing effort, with new signs and a tagline.

"It's real... opportunities... now," St. Louis County Economic Council's Denny Coleman says of the slogan. "Lemay is a very real community, what you see is what you get. There's a lot of opportunities, and they're right now because we can help leverage investment through these port (authority) funds."

Those funds, $4 million of them, have renovated historic buildings and torn down vacant ones. They now will help business-owners spruce up their front doors with matching funds for facade improvements.
A new county park, including a playground and soccer fields, is also planned, along with a new community center.
