U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke plans to speak about President Obama's goal of doubling exports over the next five years during a World Trade Center luncheon next month.

The event will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 24 at The Ritz-Carlton in Clayton.

Missouri has experienced a 35 percent jump in exports over last year, said Tim Nowak, executive director of the St. Louis World Trade Center.

Local business leaders and elected officials who have pushed more than two years to make Lambert-St. Louis International Airport a trade hub with China say they will know by the end of the year if it will happen.

"Given the focus on the newly announced National Export Initiative and importance of exports to the successful long-term economic recovery of our region, I cannot think of a more relevant speaker at a more appropriate venue," St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley said in a statement Monday.

Each year, more than 600 business leaders representing small, medium-sized and multinational organizations attend this program.
