With its hefty price tag, Express Scripts' new pharmacy automation center in north St. Louis County has enabled the company to process 500,000 pills per hour and to package and ship 110,000 prescriptions daily. Built to suit, the 221,000-square-foot Technology & Innovation Center opened in June at NorthPark, a $400 million business park at the corner of North Hanley and Interstate 70 that was developed by Paul McKee Jr.'s O'Fallon, Mo.-based McEagle Properties.

The high-volume filler facility, which sits on 12 acres, cost $74 million, according to the St. Louis County Economic Council. Construction costs topped $16 million. "The building was built for them and delivered to them as a structure," said Tripp Hardin, senior vice president of CB Richard Ellis, who brokered the deal. Express Scripts outfitted the facility with pharmacy equipment but the company would not disclose costs.

An overpass connects the facility to the Express Scripts headquarters complex, located just south of Interstate 70
