KSDK -- St. Louis regional leaders endorsed the completion of Route 141 at a celebration Wednesday in Maryland Heights.

The new stretch of the Maryland Heights Expressway, which runs from Route 364 south to Water Works Road, will officially open to drivers near the end of October. The expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion to Creve Coeur Mill Road, Route 141, Fee Fee Road and River Valley Drive. But the work is not over.

Funds are still being raised to connect the highway to Olive Boulevard from the north, and to widen the stretch from St. Luke's Hospital to Olive. The next phase is expected to cost $65 million.

According to the St. Louis County Economic Council, the completion of the Highway 141 corridor is expected to create more than 170,000 new jobs over the next two decades, and have an impact of nearly $20 billion.
