Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Kit Bond today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has released $475,000 in federal funds to the St. Louis County Economic Council for the planning and design of the Lemay Community Center in south St. Louis County. Bond secured the funds as part of HUD's Economic Development Initiative awards program in the fiscal year 2009 omnibus appropriations bill.

"This is exactly the kind of investment the government should be making during this tough economic time," said U.S. Senator Kit Bond. "The community center will provide the residents of Lemay and South County a safe place to gather for educational programming and recreation. More importantly, this state-of-the-art community center will inspire business owners and others to invest in the Lemay community and its construction will provide badly needed jobs."

Currently, Lemay residents must use either the Kennedy Community Center in Mehlville or the Affton White-Rodgers Community Center in St. Louis. The new 30,000 square foot facility will be LEED-certified to minimize the environmental impact of its construction and operation.

Bond, ranking member of the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee that funds HUD, has long fought to secure seed money to jumpstart economic development and job creation in Missouri communities.
