Express Scripts Inc. is moving forward with a planned expansion at its new headquarters on the campus of University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The $30 million project will include about 181,000 square feet of office space, a three-level parking garage and two surface parking lots. Construction is expected to be completed in December 2008.

The new building will hold 900 employees in areas such as information technology and financial services. The expansion will bring the remainder of Express Scripts' staff involved in corporate functions to the new headquarters from its former headquarters in Maryland Heights.

The headquarters today has 321,000 square feet and houses about 1,100 employees.

After the expansion, the Maryland Heights facility will remain open with about 1,000 workers, including those in Express Scripts' mail-order pharmacy.

Express Scripts, the nation's third-largest pharmacy benefits manager, has about 3,000 workers across the St. Louis area.

Express Scripts' new headquarters is part of University Place NorthPark, the business, technology and research Park at UMSL. The first phase was completed in May.

Express Scripts decided to grow in stages because it was easier from organizational and logistical perspectives, said Steve Littlejohn, the company's spokesman.

He also said it gave the company a better sense of how quickly it was growing and allowed it to expand accordingly.

Express Scripts has no plans at this time to expand again at the UMSL campus, Littlejohn said.
