A children's center planned for Wellston, Mo., will get $3 million in federal funds, under the omnibus spending bill that passed the U.S. Senate Sunday.
The funds will go to the St. Louis County Economic Council, which will design and construct the Wellston Developmental Child Care Center in St. Louis to help provide child care services for low- and moderate-income families.
The 19,556-square-foot building will serve up to 164 children in 10 classrooms and will be managed by the University City Children's Center.
The construction of the Wellston Child Care Center is a part of a larger plan to create new industrial, commercial and residential growth in Wellston.
The plan includes a residential development of 100 new homes and a commercial corridor spanning the length of the community, spurring job growth.
With an expected increase of 600 jobs in the area, the new Wellston center will provide quality child care for the expanding residential population and work force, said U.S. Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., who pushed for the funding.
