Well Educated Population

St. Louis is noted for its world-class education, both public and private. At the high school level, St. Louis County has 23 public high school districts that scored above the State average on assessment tests. St. Louis’ private high schools achieve a high standard of excellence. For example, St. Louis University High School ranked 9th nationwide 2001 among all schools for average ACT test score.

St. Louis continues this excellence at the baccalaureate level, where Washington University and St. Louis University both carry prestigious national academic reputations. In the most recent US News and World Report ranking, Washington University was ranked 9h in the nation, tied with the prestigious Dartmouth College and ahead of such institutions as Columbia, Brown, and the University of Chicago. St. Louis University ranked 24th in the nation in the report’s listing of “Schools that offer the Best Value.”

With respect to technical training, engineering degrees may be obtained at the high school, community college, and university levels. Fourteen high schools engaged in the Engineering Academy.

Engineering Academy Features and Benefits
  • Unique School-Business Partnership
The St. Louis Regional Engineering Academy is a unique partnership between 14 high schools, the St. Louis Community College, Institutions of Higher Education, Economic Development, and St. Louis Businesses who employ a technically trained workforce.   The academy begins training future engineers in high school with a rigorous math and science based technical curriculum that prepares students for success at the post-secondary level. Corporate supporters in need of technically trained workers such as Boeing, Ameren, GKN Aerospace, Sunnen Products Co, Centocor (Johnson and Johnson), Tyco/Mallinckrodt, and others ensure the curriculum meets the demand of industry by participating in an industry advisory board.
  • Enhancing Student Achievement
A large focus in today's public education environment includes enhancing student achievement. The St. Louis Regional Academy of Engineeering improves student performance by increasing rigor, requiring 4-years of college preparatory math and science, and applying real world industry based applications to student lessons.   The Regional Academy of Engineering reaches draws upon a diverse student body from high schools of all over St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis, including districts with large minority student populations that are typically underrepresented in the engineering field.
  • Keeping St. Louis Competitive in a Global Economy
While the number of Americans qualified for Science and engineering jobs is leveling off, the number of technically trained workers in St. Louis prepared for jobs of the future will decrease by over one-half within the next 10-years due to retirements occurring in our aging workforce. The St. Louis Regional Engineering Academy will help fill this shortage so that in 6-8 years after completing post-secondary education students will add value to local companies in search of engineers.   Because the continuing retention and growth of St. Louis based companies will depend on access to technically trained workers, and the future competitiveness of St. Louis in a global economy is predicated on maintaining an advantage in pioneering scientific and technological advancements, the academy plays a critical role in maintaining and enhancing the St. Louis region's economy, job base, and overall quality of life.
