Happy New Year from St. Louis County Economic Council!
I am sure you, like many of us, are happy to bode 2008 farewell and welcome 2009 with hopes of a better year. It seems that every day another story appears, reminding everyone about the uncertain economy. With bailouts, layoffs, declining sales, and a tough credit market, we all are looking forward to a better 2009.
Yet, despite the bevy of bad economic news, signs of optimism are visible. There is hope that the proposed economic recovery package will positively and quickly impact the nation, and we anticipate innovative ways to rekindle the lagging economy by the new administration.
As usual, the Economic Council will do its part to help businesses of all sizes find new opportunities to create jobs and growth for the region. We are confident that St. Louis County will both emerge from this downturn stronger as well as serve as a leader for economic investment.
We wish to extend to you our hope for a joyous and prosperous 2009!
Denny Coleman

|
St. Louis County Economic Council will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a special luncheon to be held Thursday, May 14, 2009 at the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton. St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley and the Economic Council will showcase important countywide economic developments in addition to honoring local business, community and civic leaders for their investment, expansion and job creation in St. Louis County. Attendees also will have the opportunity to network before the luncheon.
“Over the past 25 years, we have experienced ups and downs, expansions and recessions, and each year we work toward creating investment and jobs for our region” said Economic Council President and CEO Denny Coleman. “Our upcoming luncheon will showcase how we have worked with local industries, community leaders and regional allies to make St. Louis County a great place to live and work.”
The Economic Council’s last meeting held in October 2007 attracted an impressive group of business civic and government leaders from the entire St. Louis region and sold out with over 700 attendees.
“We are preparing for a special event, one that will commemorate our history as well as celebrate the future of economic growth in St. Louis County,” said Nancy Schnoebelen, vice president of marketing and communications for the Economic Council. “The luncheon will highlight the many business, civic and government leaders who have helped strengthen our region.”

| NEW PLAN TO BUILD ON SUCCESS IN LEMAY |
|
St. Louis County Economic Council received a $269,266 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, Office of Economic Adjustment for a planning study related to military, educational, recreational, and commercial developments within the Lemay/Jefferson Barracks area of south St. Louis County.
The Economic Council considers the investment in this area critical to the economic growth and prosperity of the region, and will evaluate how best to ensure the success and impact of increased developments.
“Current military and community investments in and around Jefferson Barracks and the surrounding Lemay community have created momentum for economic growth,” said St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley. “The study will help uncover and plan for increased economic development opportunities for the area.”
In 2005, under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), the U.S. Department of Defense called for the realignment of certain military operations in the St. Louis region, including the Air National Guard units at Jefferson Barracks. As part of BRAC, the Missouri National Guard is expanding its presence at Jefferson Barracks with the construction of a new Army Reserve Center, which will host training for the Army Reserves and National Guard.
The study will identify community enhancements that will support the expansion at Jefferson Barracks and within Lemay. “These support measures will be important to assisting the Lemay community and expanding the economic impact of these investments,” said St. Louis County Economic Council President and CEO Denny Coleman. |

| MARYLAND HEIGHTS TO HOST OPEN HOUSE FOR NEW CITY HALL |
|

Officials with the City of Maryland Heights have announced they will host an open house for the community’s new Government Center. The ceremony will take place Saturday, January 24th from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm.
The new government center – located east of Interstate 270 at 11911 Dorsett Road – houses the administrative staff and police department. The facility also includes operational workspace for the city staff and police officers, community meeting spaces, support areas, information and communication systems.
“The building is much more accessible for the general public and provides a better working environment for our employees,” said Maryland Height Mayor Michael Moeller. “The community now has a government center that represents the vision of its citizens and businesses.”
St. Louis-based Chiodini Associates were the architects for the new 70,000 GSF building, and the general contractor was Lawlor Construction. The municipal facility was completed in late 2008, and city operations began transitioning into the new building in October. |
