Mo. to get $10B, Ill. $23B from stimulus packageMissouri will receive at least $10.33 billion and Illinois will get at least $22.74 billion as their slices of the economic recovery package, new estimates show. The Center for American Progress, a Washington, D.C.-based liberal think tank, broke out state-by-state allocations that represent 69 percent of the total cost of the act so Missouri and Illinois could get even more as other money will be distributed through grants and funding formulas, according to the center. An earlier estimate pegged Missouri’s slice at $4.4 billion. The 1,071-page American Recovery and Reinvestment Act cleared the House Friday 246-183, without any Republican support, and received final passage in the Senate later that night on a 61-37 vote with three Republicans supporting it. The White House estimates the package, which includes billions in funding for infrastructure, education, tax breaks, unemployed workers and state aid, will create or save 3.5 million jobs nationwide. Included in the package is $71 billion for clean energy programs, $87 billion for Medicaid, $8.4 billion for transit projects, $8 billion for high-speed rail and a State Stabilization Fund to help states and local governments avoid budget cuts. The measure also earmarks $39.5 billion for education. In December, Missouri transportation officials unveiled a wish list of 34 projects totaling $510 million that the state would pursue with stimulus money. The projects, which include road, bridge, air, rail, transit and sidewalk improvements, would create about 14,000 jobs and have a $2.4 billion impact on the state’s economy, Missouri Department of Transportation officials have said. |
